Anglo-Celtic Connections

This collection of 103,914 transcripts, new to MyHeritage, contains burial and cremation records from Birmingham from 1874 onwards. Records typically include the name of the deceased, year of birth, residence, date of death, and date and place of burial.

The collection is free on MyHeritage as it’s added from https://birminghamburialrecords.co.uk/ which lists over 1.5 million records with a minimal index giving just name, month and year of burial and cemetery. Further information from Birmingham Council costs £10 for a digital download.

Cemeteries included from the Birmingham Council site are Brandwood End, Handsworth, Key Hill, Kings Norton, Lodge Hill, Quinton, Sutton Coldfield, Sutton New Hall, Warstone, Witton and Yardley, with crematoria records when available.

This collection of 189,878 transcript records contains burials and cremations from the Tameside borough of Greater Manchester, England from 1860 onwards. Records typically include the name of the deceased, year of birth, residence, date of death, and date and place of burial.

Cemeteries included are Ashton, Audenshaw, Denton, Droyslden, Dukinfield, Hyde, Mossley, and Mottram.

The collection is free on MyHeritage as it’s added from http://web.tameside.gov.uk/BACAS/. where clicking on the final column of a result of interest will show others in the same grave.

Images of microfilmed copies of handwritten Roman Catholic parish registers that date before 1910 are now available. The collection is for the Archdiocese of Toronto: the City of Toronto; the regional municipalities of Peel, York and Durham; and Simcoe County. The burial registers for St. Paul’s Basilica, as well as St. Michael’s cemetery up to 1910 are also included. While they’re not name indexed you’ll likely find the Ontario registration on Ancestry, or free at FamilySearch where there’s also a broader range of browseable Ontario Roman Catholic Church Records.

Focus this week is on Waterford,  Ireland.

Waterford, Dungarvan Town Commissioners Records
New and exclusive to Findmypast, these records cover the years 1851-1922. The Town Commission was responsible for government activities such as road maintenance, housing,
and regulating markets. Within the records, you might discover details about finances or occupation. Around 47,000 transcripts and original images make up this collection.

Poor Law Union Board of Guardians Minute Books
Exclusive to Findmypast, the additional Waterford records number around 38,000 for a total of 432,041 records. Find information between 1837 and 1922 on marriages in the workhouse, emigration assistance, or money owed. The number of records peaks for the 10 years around 1890. Be sure to check the original images for extra detail.

Queensland
The week’s additions also include around 33,000 new funeral notices for Queensland added into existing, exclusive collection, covering the years 1973-2003.

You’re fortunate if someone in your family tree is amongst the 59,221 name indexed in this collection. You get to see an image of the original one-page service file sourced from ADM 337 at The (UK) National Archives linked to the index.

These volunteers were clerks, bakers, labourers … not seafarers by trade, but they wanted to serve their country in the navy in the event of war.

MyHeritage has the same records, and a few more,  59,784.

Findmypast includes these in a more extensive British Royal Naval Reserve 1899-1930 collection which includes those in ADM 240 as well as ADM 337 for a total 81,544 records.

The records are handwritten and include abbreviations for which there is no guide, even that at TNA.

 

 

Back in February, this collection had 3,146,854 entries. Now there are 5,022,103. There’s no indication of the years or places added.

As with most large indexes on Ancestry from printed material, the index was created using text recognition software.

As a word of warning, such registers are often promoted as a way to fill in between decennial censuses. But be aware that the registers appear to have been compiled in advance. I find a great grandfather registered to vote in a place he’s known to have left the previous year.

Findmypast’s collection England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1910-1932 includes over 20 million entries for Lancashire with better supplemental material than Ancestry.

MyHeritage does not include UK electoral records.

On this date, 1 August 1942, 80 years ago, for Canadian servicemen, the focus of war action was in the air.

35 men serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force lost their lives on the day. Of those 13 were aged 20 years, including the majority of those whose age is not recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. That they lived they would be centenarians this year. The oldest was 29.

Six have no known grave and are commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial. The others are buried in Belgium (7), Germany (12), Netherlands (10).
