Weir(d?) Times at Library and Archives Canada – Consultations

  • Consultations
Under the heading Transparency and Reporting, LAC lists Consultations with the statement “Library and Archives Canada consults the public to help us make program and policy decisions. Dig deeper and you’ll find there’s no way to do so. The latest item is dated 2021.
If the list is up to date, transparency shows there have been no recent consultations.
LAC has (had?) a Services Consultation Committee.  It hasn’t met for two years. The co-Chairs listed are Johanna Smith, who is no longer with LAC, and Karen Linauskas. Emails to the address listed bounced.
Recent Departmental Plans state that LAC aims to place “user needs at the centre of its concerns”. How are the user needs determined? Are other consultation mechanisms in place?  If so. what are they?
  • October 2026 update on Ādisōke
The report leads with an update on the landscaping, best done before winter. Inside, “teams of workers are busy painting the walls, installing lighting and flooring, fitting doors and continuing the carpentry work.”
  • Knowledge Exchange
In partnership with uOttawa, LAC is bringing together research, expertise and documentary heritage to foster dialogue and encourage deeper exploration of Canada’s stories and history. It’s a new initiative, starting on 17 November with an Arctic Narratives event which will “examine the North through the records, stories and research that have shaped our understanding of the Arctic, its history, peoples, landscapes and future.”  Find out more and register for in-person or online attendance at https://evenements-events.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Events/Details/275
